The 2002 SNORT/FearMe Challenge happened over the fourth of July weekend on the Moon Rocks at Naches, Wa. It had originally been intended to be a club versus club event, but when the day arrived, some clubs were missing members and there were several people with no club that wanted to participate. So, beings how the challenge is only about having fun and getting to meet new people, we decided to draw numbers and partner up. We ended up with twelve teams consisting of two vehicles and drivers each. They would each take turns going through an obstacle spotting for each other, and the fastest combined time would win. |

(Brian Anderson dropping down the steep side) |
As the teams got to the rocks, you could tell they were more than a little anxious to see what the "challenge" was going to be. Brian Anderson was the first to go up with this being the very first run on his new rig. The course had a steep uphill on the right with a U-shaped turn to the left at the top, and then down a very steep descent. Brian did an excellent job and seemed to make short work of the course. His partner on the other hand didn't fare so well. He made it up the steep climb, but then ran into problems at the top and was not able to finish the course. |
Next up, Mike Dixon flew through the course in about half the time that Brian did, and really got the crowd cheering. They seemed to have a little problem getting Russ (his partner) up the hill and ended up winching him. Overall though, it was looking pretty good for these guys, and they were feeling pretty confident. Actually, it wasn't till near the end of the day before they were bumped from the number one position. |

From here the day just got more and more exciting. The steep hill climb turned out to be quite the source of entertainment for the crowd as it would make many a rig do a wheelstand, and made several pull winch cable. It even threw Kevin Duthie for a ride landing on his top (in other words, upside down). The downhill section seemed to also have quite the pucker factor as most people had a strap hooked to the rear of their vehicle with their spotter holding on for dear life. Also, Paul Gagnon and Matt Monohan both blew beads on their right front tires, and both chose to finish the course out on the rim and fix the tires later. |

All in all it was a fun day. The weather was beautiful and the challenge was a blast. I would like to thank all of the drivers for putting on a great show, and I'd like to thank all of the spectators for cheering em on and showing their support. I would especially like to thank everyone for doing such a great job in cleaning up after themselves. There was not one piece of trash to be found anywhere on those rocks when we were through. I hope everyone had as much fun as we did, and hope to see you all again next time! Also, be sure to check out the pictures, cause words just can't do this any justice. |
