Pound on both sides of the front of the pumpkin with a hammer. This will loosen it up, and then two pry bars.

Or you could buy a spreader.

usually when i take em out they have lost any preload they ever had so they pop right out. the one time i actually had to work at it, i set some scrap steel up over the top of the housing and used the scissor jack stock wranglers come wih under the hood and a peice of cable through the carier to pull it out.

I always have used a shop rag in the pinion gear and then use the pry bar to rotate the pinion yoke, effectively pushing the carrier out by the ring gear.

I did this trick, but instead of the pry bar I was able to turn the axle so the coverside was facing towards the ground (my work box) then I picked up the axle end and dropped it down on a cross member in my box. The Carrier fell right out!

Thanks for the easy tip!

Now to start grinding away the welds around the knuckles...joy.

Don't you just band-saw/chop-saw the tube off flush with the knuckle? That looks like a good trick to save you from beating/pressing the knuckle off, just cut the short remaining piece of tube out of the knuckle.

Depends on whether you're shortening that side. If you're not, I'd imagine it would be a PITA to get the knuckle re-aligned without it floating on the tube end.
