View Full Version : lockrite won't unlock/ratchet after install

So my roommate and I put a lock rite in the front of his ramcharger last week (dana 44 30 spline), and it won't unlock at all. We followed all the directions and got it all assembled into the carrier, but after we put the front end back together and went for a test drive it was completely locked, like a spool. We put in the garage, jacked it up and tried spinning the tires by hand and still couldn't get it unlocked.
Any ideas?

90% probability the pins are broken. Happens all the time especially on new installs.

I bought a used Lock-rite and the pins where broken, what exactly causes that? the rest of the lock-rite looked brand but all the pins were sheared. I would figure that there would be other wear, damage.

So what causes the pins to break? I'm pretty confident that we followed the directions correctly.

I see no reason that the pins would be broken on new install.
Are the clearances to spec? There needs enough space for it to unlock.

I think it would really easy on a front axle to set it up too tight, since you don't have to leave enough room for a c-clip.
Just a guess.

How could it be set up too tight? I put one in about 3 weeks ago and there was no adjustment to it. It pretty much goes in one way only.

It's been a while since I've done it, and I'm certainly not an expert, but it seems like there was something about checking clearances and using thrust washers of different thickenesses to achieve the correct clearance. Probably dependent on application, so I'm just guessing...

Nope, directions say to use the stock thrust washers and cross pin, as long as they are in very good condition. Otherwise you need to put new ones in.

The No-Slip comes with a little plastic gauge to check the clearances of the mechanism. But according to the directions, they want you to call tech support if it's not within spec because your diff may be messed up.
That may have been what I was thinking of... Too many cobwebs I guess

A bent housing tends to fight sidegears and lockers.
To bad the only way to check is to strip the housing.
