There's a pretty big group heading over there on Jan 10th, alot of Yotatech folks, a couple WATTORA guys, some 4ROC members (4runners owners club), and others. I think we're planning to split up into different groups, depending on what people want to tackle, but I know there are a few of us interested in checking out the newer trails that have been added.

I wheel at tahuyah about once a month, If your rig is not very built you will have a good time, but there is some good shiat if you know where to go. The new trail is alright, lots of trails have been closed you really need to know where your going or your just driving on logging roads. I live 20 minutes away so if you have any questions let me know.

tahuya can be a challenge. i have a friend who blew a head on our last trip in the mud pit, another broke the electric fan mounts off his junk in the pit, i broke a hub on riff-raff and my tranny puked and i lost my rear main seal on the way home...
dont go during the dry month as it is dusty and boring. it is way too much fun this time of year though. take a friend who knows the trails or you will get lost...the quadrapaws have a map, but it is almost 2 years old and they have added many trails since then.
after i left the rest of my club found a new mud pit that was pretty narley, only guy who made it out alive was shod with 35's and front locker...every one else had to get a tug. the other great thing about tahuya is it is full size friendly :redneck:

depends on what your driving & geared for?
i myself would like to move to elbe hills. i just love that place.
i live in olympia & the drive to tahuya isn't that bad, but i think for the distance elbe hills or evans creek is by far the better choice.
tahuya seemed to be all blocked off everwhere, last time we were there(2x months ago though)
if someones showing up at tahuya tomorrow, why not let some of us know? & maybe we can crowd in on it!

i broke my t case in half the other day at tahuya. it was a good time. i go there a few times a month, if you know where to go ou can find some halfway challenging things to do. last time i saw about 20 mexican brush pickers up there though, i wasnt too happy about that.

I have never been yet, thinking of going this next weekend. I am running a yj on 40s thats reasonably flexy, is it worth the trip? I am coming from puyallup. Will be going with a cruiser on 38.5 sxs set up the same as mine. I am sure there are things that will give us some entertainment. We are about the scenery too, not just extreme wheelin.
sandusk, what is with the mexi comment? Why did you get rid of your 40s? I am the big guy (was with my big guy friend john also) that talked to you in the parking lot at the enumclaw swap meet. You had a red yj on 40s. Remember we were talking to you about cherokee springs and I think fuel inj. v8 swaps.

brush pickers - thats exactly what they do. They pick the underrush to sell it to florists.
If your heading out this weekend, lemme know, I may show up down there for a quicky run.

yeah, they pick it illegally!!!!!!!!!!
you are suppose to pay to pick off the land, check into it if you dont believe, most of them are aliens, shouldnt even be here!
there are actually lagit businesses that lease land and pick brush for a living, not 20 mexicans doing it out of the back of a 79 ford e350 cargo van

thats because they were picking salal or otherwise known as lemon leaf. it only grows in certian areas in washingston state and oregon. its in high demand by florists world wide. its hard work but great money and they earn every cent.

I just hit the quote sign on the bottom of the reply. then it puts it in as a quote. I love the tbi, very reliable. I do see how it could use a little more power. I mean its totally controlable, and sometimes you just want to be out of control. You should come out sunday. I am probably going. then we can be the two dumbest, I mean biggest rigs there.

Sunday at 10am... hmm.. I may be able to make it out there for a bit. I just have something to work on for Region 1 and Winter Convention this weekend as well.... Probably about 30 hours of work involved.
It's not the tire size jim, it's just getting out there for fun. :)
Oh, and there's some rock fields out there that can be bypassed that wheelinjp may have some fun on. at least I did, I got all hung up on my 36" tires, mostly because the rocks were wet/slimey and I couldn't climb them, just slide off and thunk!
Bring the diggy cameras though, I need pics for the project I'm working on. :)

Hey jim I am offended(not really) i needed to get rid of that cj5 cause only midgets fit comfortably.I am way more comfy now. Is this place full size friendly?Allies friend from work has a blazer on 40s that might want to go as well. I told him probably not, but have to ask. I dont have my winch on yet so I hope I wont need it. It should be fun with being open in the front still. I am welded in the rear though.
1/15/04 update
No blazer is going but I most likely am. I am just going to come alone or bring one of my buddies. I deleted my previous post for no trailtalk content and just commenting here instead. Jim I just need to know where to meet for b-fast.

Hey all -
I am dying to get my feet wet with wheeling in the NW! I am fairly new to the area and would like to meet some people around here.
I may be able to sneak away for a run this weekend - i see Sunday being thrown around and the time of ~10am. Is that correct?
Also, I have a TJ with 31" MT's, locked front and rear and 3" lift. Does that sound like an OK machine for this place? I may also bring the CJ too.
I am not sure if I can make the Noob run.... I am trying to figure that out. May be in San Fran.

01-15-2004, 07:48 PM
Tahuya is a perfect place for a 31" tire'd rig and a newish driver. Easy enough to not get in to trouble if you dont' want to, got a few spots to play on that can get you in to trouble. but it's all bypassable (built in legal bypasses).
Those of us with 36"+ tires are going more to get out... though there is a man made rock field (again that you can bypass) that got me all messed up in. yeah.... I've had to stack rocks in tahuya.... (hanging head in shame) LOL

sounds great! Thanks for the info. It sounds perfect. I ike testing my limits and having fun - I am not too used to the off camber stuff, as FL is pretty flat (except, I did manage to roll the TJ on the side). I have not been out since I left Florida. Well... I tried to explore the Capitol Forest, which was uneventful.
I will check into it and reply here. So, to confirm, we are talking Sunday at 10 at what meeting spot?

Tahuya is fairly flat, you have up/downs, but no offcamber to really speak of.
Hopefully the trail we dug up last time we were out there hasn't filled back in completely.
10am at the staging area, which is the parking lot. follow the motorbike noise. LOL or, I'll be at safeway at 9:30am in Belfair. Either way, if you have problems you got my cell and most of us out there run CB Channel 4.

Well I just got back. I had a pretty good time. Thanks to pokey, and the Hombres for inviting me.(very cool old mule diesel cj5) Seem like a very nice group of friends. Nothing too hard but the new trail is cool. It is equivilent to any good trail at evans . I like the rock piles all over the place. If you stop almost anywhere to chat or eat there is a pile of rock there. Was some cool mudholes there too, nothing too deep though. I just had a fun time and it was nice to get out. I think there is enough fun stuff for more to go and not be bored. Its not all about hardcore. Fullsizes seem to fit ok, the new trail is tight but fit a long box ford .

Glad you enjoyied yourself Sean, To bad you missed the best part. after coming back from looking for the north loop (unsucsessfully:( ) We headed back out on the south loop again and again found the rock piles. as you well know the one claimed the passenger side of my exhaust earlier well this time it claimed a rear axle:( glad it was on the full floater side so the wheel didnt fall off! Then we found our way over to that big puddle area and played around in there for a while. This hole managed to eat my now 3 wheel drive jeep and in the process claimed a starter in the 3' water. It also managed to soak me up to my waist hooking up the dreaded tow strap (yucky wet and cold) However we were able to pull start it and I was able to get back on my own.:bounce1:
Oh well its JUST TAHUYA as they like to say well we had a good time Thanks to the Quadrapaws for all the work they do to keep this great trail system open:) :)

It sounds like you guys had some more fun. I felt a little funny about running off and was hoping to catch up to you guys, but we got lost a little on a quad trail(on accident) , then ran most of the new trail. I found out I lost a transfer case bolt and bushing on my crossmember, and headed to the truck. We left at 3:30.All in all I had a great time.

hey wheelinjp, I liked your jeep in the pictures but after seeing it today at tahuya I really like it and my girlfriend (the girl that asked you if you wanted to trade) loves it. Now I think I need some 60s for my 7 (the black one on 35 inch boggers thats as tall as yours) so I can run a set of 40s to make her happy.
Any way, we went and played in a big pond that looks brand new, and floated the samurai and killed a toy alternator. I blew my exhaust donuts. What is it about this place that every time we go we break. Last time my buddy Larry's chev burned to the ground and I lost an ignition. Ow well, if you wanna play you gotta pay, right.

there are lots of quarrys around I would look in the yellow pages and depending on how big of rocks you want you may only get 2-4 in a 5 yard box:eek: thats where fuel and such starts to add up. If you do build it they will come!!!! check your homeowners insurance:(

eh.. it was just a couple little upshoots. Thing is, keep in mind, the people watching were doing there hardest to climb it in fairly stock rigs. So,when locked up, geared down, even making the hardest line you can probably looked really cool. I'm guessing I had about 5' of air under my front tire though.... rig was feeling a little light front/back.
The rocks were brought in by a BIG excavator. We'll run the backhoes and what not out there, but if I recall, we paid someone to run the excavator that struggled at times to pick up those rocks. and place them. (in the muddy rock field)
As far as the rock piles go, I believe those were brought out there by dump truck of one form or another.
Cost - DNR pays for it, so I'm not sure. I can probably find out though.
Thanks of the trial comment. We do what we can with what we got. It can be a challenge maintaining a trail that is flat. If you hit the south loop, those holes we dug to rough up the trail.... some of them used to be 3' deep on alternate corners when we first built it. Bu they fill in, etc. We'll get back in there sooner or later to dig it back out.

Travis, you worked on the new "Back 40" trail?
Let me me say THANK YOU! Between that and the "Riff Raff" trail, I am not so bored anymore when I take a group of newbies out there. Tahuya has always been pretty sedate, but it's nice to have something to play around on while the stock rigs play in the mud or freak out when they first experience wheel lift.

Don't thank me, thank Jeff Williams and the Quadrapaws. There are thousands of recorded hours alone put in to that ORV Park over the few years from that club. And there aren't that many of them.

Well then, thanks to ALL of you. :)
It's nice to see some new life breathed into that place. It's also nice to see that with a few exceptions, people seem to be respecting the work and leaving the signs alone and packing out their trash.
It's refreshing to see an ORV area that is getting better, as opposed to slowly following that predictable path toward closure that includes trash, vandalism and bullet holes, as too many areas have done over the years.

That was fun. I stayed up till 2:30 am finishing rewiring the cruiser and decided that I was going at 7:30 am.
Tahuya works great for a test run to work out any bugs on a rig that just got put back together.
I was quite amazed at the huge number of people out there that day. Parking lot was completely full, so was the overflow parking and people were parking along the entrance also.
ledfoot, it was nice to meet you and your friend in the sammy (the dude in the rubicon tj was nice enough also...don't know where he came from though).
I really appreciated that it was 3rd gear speed through the boring stuff until you got to a "play area".

Yep,
That paint job has lasted quite well. I touch it up now and then with a paint brush though:redneck:

You know Jim that spray job of your did turn out nice. I think its cool that it still shines like when you sprayed it what 7years ago. I have no idea what year that was but I know it was a year before I got my cj5 and I got it in 97. Man time flies.
We did manage to stop and pick up some trash while out there, Id like to start a competition on every trail run to see who can pick up more and the most interesting trash, like at the beach cleanup. I bet we could buy some beer and pizza with all the aluminum cans by the end of a month. Sorry kimmy I know off topic.
travis, is there any updated trail maps for the tahuya area? the ones on site were printed in 96. I will look on the Quadrapaws site too. Thanks again for everyones hard work, we will definitely be back.

Bored?? NEWBIES??
Said the guy who was afraid of trying the rock garden because, and I quote, "the rocks are wet and slippery". :lame:
I did have a little respect for you and your rig when you finally decided to try the garden after the Jeeps went through (twice). With this post....it's all gone.
You know what....I'd rather wheel with a bunch of stocker newbies than wheel with a poser.

Hey this is a nice thread about TRAILS so take the chit chat elsewhere, No one wants this thread deleted.

Yeah.....I was there that day, and I really wouldn't call the group a bunch of noobs. There were only 2 stockers there that day. Someone was really thinking highly of themselves by addressing the group as a bunch of noobs.

There's a difference between a puss and a poser :finger: I don't claim to be something I'm not.
I did not mean to hijack the thread but I found what Rob had to say offensive (as I was one of the 30 other rigs out there w/ him that day).
Anyways, back on track of the thread. Tahuya is definately one of the nicer ORV areas that I have been to as far as the people go (and some other reasons already stated above). It seems that both times that I have been out there the people out on the trail realize that in order to keep our few ORV parks we need to take care them (as groups and individuals).
I'm not saying that everyone I meet in other areas are dumb asses but I run into them more often. Granted, I've only been to Tahuya twice. :finger:

I am not sure who either of you are or which group you were with that day, so you have me at a disadvantage.
I appologize if you took offense to that remark, it certainly was not directed at you personally. The group I was with for much of the day was pretty tame and the drivers inexperienced.
I could go on, but as was mentioned, this is not the proper place.

Off topic but a trail issue. A good game to play to keep the kids involved and teach them to clean up. When you meet before heading out on the trail have everyone (adults) Take all of the change out of their pockets and put it in a bag. The kid that picks up the most trash during the run wins the bag.
