Well I was wondering how to select the right strength rated heim. What is the most common for the steering on a mainly trail but street driven rig. I know to stay away from greasable ones so how long are they lasting for those with them. I will also be building hydro assist at the same time.I plan to use 1.5in dom with 3/4in heims for my tierod. Then just a double sheer tab for my 2x8in ram for the assist. I have a separate draglink going to my hysteer arm and am using TREs for it. Any HELP would be great, comments from the peanut gallery wouldnt.

Sean, heim joints dont last long when used all of the time. While they may be stronger they arnt generaly made for daily use. their also very harsh on the road since they dont have any shock (give ) built into them at least until the start clunking. Just my peanuts worth. Jim

can't really help with which brand. But can advise you to stay away from the teflon lined type. they lost the liner in no time. the three piece ( inner ball, outer race, body) type have lasted longer than the two piece (inner ball, body) for me.

Thanks guys. Hey Jim your comment is why I keep hesitating to buy heims. I know alot of people run them, and I like the thought of a TRE not wearing out in a year. I honestly dont think TREs will fit on my tierod because of limited room from the top of the knuckle(tierod pad) to the bottom of the springs. I can fit heims in no problem, and not have to worry about tapering on the other side of the already tapered mounting pad.I can just drill them out to 3/4in and use a bolt with the heims. The peanut comment was to keep out chat, and useless comments.
Hey magic thanks for the link and tech on selection, this was what I was hoping for.

QA-1 and whatever Art Morrision sells have worked good for me. I have tried others and had them wear out fast. I have a burly drag link with 1 ton TRE's, interested? what length you need?

Sean, Ok what is a TRE  and shouldnt you be at work? BTW. Need you to come by and make some suggestions on how I should wire the new addition. Jim
the heims that Jason and Trevor (S&N) used on my suspension now have almost 2 years and 30,000 miles on them, haven't had any problems...

Jim TRE is just tie rod end abbreviated. I can stop by this weekend, give me a call.
what-jeep, thanks for the link, I am looking into those. By the way nice camaro, I didnt have the opportunity to compliment you on it earlier. Do you race it still? Very clean sharp car.
333j I cant believe you already have 30k on that set up. Seems like yesterday I was following the build up. Well that is somewhat reassuring on running the heims. I just need to get outside and measure up what I can fit. There are some early 70s chevy tierods that step down I might use. but again getting the taper reversed on the knuckle seems to be an issue. I have the reamer for the taper but the bottom will not be tapered. I havent found any inserts that would work either.

Ok so Im a dumb@$$ I was wondering what kind of special heim joints I was missing.
333j hat kind of joints are those I have never seen any that hold up well to lots of extended use. If they offer that kind of life I want some for my racerig.
Sean, I will call you this weekend I should be home except for sat morning got to do emissions on the motorhome:(
what_jeep, thanks for the link, catalog on it's way.

There are defeinately lots of Heims to choose from. Everything that I've seen seem to be 3/4"-16 size.
I've run various brands over the past 2+ years and the best one I've ever come across came from http://www.mcmaster.com/
Page 1047 (they have an on-line catalog)
"Zinc-Plated Chrome-Alloy Steel Housing, Chrome-Plated 52100 Bearing Steel Ball, PTFE-Lined Steel Race, static radial load is 28,000lbs"
They're almost $44ea but they were the longest lasting back when my POS was a DD.
The ones from S&N Fab have been held up very well also, I think their prices are a little better too :D

I agree with Jobless.
There are a number of excellent heims out there that will last you a lot longer than a year. Expect to pay at least $50 with weld in bungs and jam nuts. It is the only way to go.
