Are the fire roads that go over the mountains around the naches trail closed in the winter? I was thinking that it would be fun to cross over the mountains in the deep snow. I know there are gates up there but I dont know when they are used..

How deep does the snow get in that area?

Most of the roads up there become groomed snowmobile trails in the winter, so they are closed to wheeled vehicles.

bummer.

Whats the best way to find fire roads that stay open during the winter? Anyone have any suggested places to go?

FS Road 70 stays open off of highway 410 just a ways past Greenwater.

They do close it at the 10 mile point up the road (where the asphalt ends and the dirt begins) where the gate is so only snowmobiles can go past that point.
Just beyond that a ways is the entrance to the Western side of the Naches trail.

We often go up there and go on a lot of the side trails during the winter months below that gate.
A lot of snow stucks, but we are pretty well prepared with winches, straps, ect to to get unstuck.
It's happened a few times.

You gotta watch out for the snowmobilers though, they love to race around the 4x4s like Kamikaze pilots.
