View Full Version : Tranny noise?
ok i just recently rebuilt my transfer case (dana 20) and cv driveshaft. that eliminated the evil noise coming from my driveline but.......
now i have major gear noise coming from the tranny (T-18). mostly third and fourth gear. sounds like gear noise. im thinking something i did caused this new noise as i dont remember hearing it before. sounds like there is no thrust and things are touching harder than thay are supposed to??? it shifts smooth and has all gears including neutral. (on a t-18 with not enough thrust neutral kinda goes away.)
so is it possible that i installed the transfer case so that the output gear is too tight against the input gears causing the tranny noise to be amplified? the only difference is, this install actually has gaskets between transfercase and tranny adapter where only rtv was before. there is a male female spigot fit between the two that is fairly snug so im thinking the alignment couldnt be too far off of at all?
any ideas out there?
need it fixed so i can go work at WV on the 15/16th....

I have no idea... but if you get too hard up I've got a buddy with a Ford T18 in perfect shape :) I think it's rebuilt too.

well just fer giggles what does he want for it?
id most likely rebuild it myself but if the price is right??

Probably a couple bills, but I'd have to ask him...

Are you sure it's the tranny? Did you also point the rear pinion at the T-case for the CV, or was that already done before the noise started? Mine started to whine in the R&P gears after the CV conversion. Can't seem to make it go away, but I don't care too much because I'm saving for new axles.
drave shaft angle is perfect points right at the output and has been fine for two years. im thinking something i did is the culprit but cant figure it out.
tranfer case front output is kinda snug but the tranny noise is constant no matter what gear the transfer case is in..... even rear only and both hi and low range. the noise is from the tranny but why? i havent ripped into it yet but thinking maybe loosen up the transfer case, wiggle it around a little to remove any misallignment then tighten it up and try it again?

All I know is the T-18 is nearly indestructable, got one in the tow rig and thrash on it dailey.I'd check the work you just did, hope it works out.

All I know is the T-18 in my CJ-8 is one of the noisest tranny's I've ever had. If you find out how to quiet it down, please post for those of us who are kind of retarded. :redneck:
yeah i put the small parts kit into the tranny three years ago and have had nothing but smooth quiet operation out of it ever since. i did not change the large ball bearing though. i cant think of anything i did this time to cause the noise im getting but i dont really think its the tranny. it is tranny noise im hearing but im thinking it MUST be something simple or something amplifying the tranny gears. ill try the loosen and reallign tonite and report back the results.

You sure nothing got stuck on the end of the T18 output shaft? That will thrust the shaft ahead and pin the input/output shafts. (found a little gob of silicone inside the rear cup for mine)
actually that sounds like the type of thing that could cause this. ill look real close.

shouldnt be real loud unless your syncros are bad. that causes whinning? maybe just turn the stereo up?? J/K mine only made noise in first gear caused by having straight cut gear teeth in first gear vice helicoil cut gears for 2,3,and 4th.

I figure I'll just run it 'till it blows, because it's not even the good T-18. When it goes out, I'll probably just go auto. But 1st gear is loud, and 3rd is too. I would turn up the stereo if I had speakers. :redneck:

I put some of that Hyperlube Power Punch in my T18, that seemed to quiet it down and make it shift easier. :redneck:
ok i got it, it was not enough thrust on the front output shaft of the transfercase. i took it all apart and even though i could turn it by hand it had a little drag to it. i added .010" shim and smacked it with a brass drift on the front yoke a few times to reset the rear bearing cap into the new shimpack against the endcap. everything turned a lot easier.
just to be sure i ran the engine and took the tranny through the gears no noise at all. put it all back and it sounds just like it should. :bounce2: :bounce2:
