I dont know whats goin on with my engine. It could be a vacum leak?? When i first start it, it runs fine, but after a few mins, ill go drive, runs smooth and good power. Then i loose power and it starts to sound raspy. I have exhaust leaks, but that cant explain why i have power, then it goes away. Im stumped
Someone told me it could be the cold start injector, could it be?? If so how can i tell

I don't think that it would be the cold start injector. the only thing that would affect would be the initial startup. The cold start injector is basically like a choke. Good luck

try the fuel filter.

I dont think the fuel filter would explain why it runs better when cold

Check yer codes, It will tell ya if the o2 is boogered. It tells you how to do it in most manuals...

Yeah I was going to try that next. Thanks

you can try to use a dvom to check the o2 sensor in the diag box under the hood open it up and put the + on the ox location i believe then ground the other on the batt. it should go rich which is above .5 volts then to lean which is below .5 volts and keep switching but only when the sensor is warm so run it a 2000 rpm for at least two minutes to heat up the sensor or just make sure it is at operating temp.

OK, my truck died on the road. It lost power, big time, i couldnt get it above 2rpm's. Then it went away, and i had normal power again. Im gueesing its my fuel filter, this happened a few times on and off every minute, and the check engine light came on every time. IM not sure if this is related to my previous prblem, so im gonna replace the filter, and see what happens. I really hope its not my fuel pump.

What codes did ya come up with? Your check fuel filter light is not the same as your check engine light.:finger:

HMMMM:finger: to you to buddy, im guessing its my fuel filter, and maybe scince my engine isnt gettin enough gas, and loosing power the engine light comes on. :finger:

Oh about the codes, i dont have a timing light:sad:

Ok I came into this a little late, but you mentioned something about rpm - does that mean you have a tach? What does it do when you "lose power"? And the 'engine light' that comes on: is it the same light that would come on if you stalled it? I had a problem similar to what you describe at one point and it ended up being a weak/dying ignition coil. It would drive ok until the coil started to warm up and then it would get all erratic. The only way I figured it out was because the tach needle would suddenly drop to 0 then be all over the place.

Good luck,
Eric

Why do you need a timing light to extract the codes? All you need is a small piece of wire or even a paperclip.:D

Yea i have the sr5 model, so i have a tach. It drops, if i let off the gas my engine dies. I tried starting it just a little bit ago, and it fired up for a second then died.

I had similar problem with my 85 and ended up being the fuel pump. Didn't go out all at once, actually fought the problem for about 3 days, then it finally went.

Arnold

What year is your 22RE?

Maverick

85

The diagnostic connector is on the driver's side fender. This assuming your wiring harness is an '85. You run a jumper wire or paperclip between the two terminals and count how many times the engine light flashes. Give me a min and I'll post a pic of the diagnostic connector...

The one circled in blue is the diagnostic connector.

im guessing
MANIFOLD AND/OR AIRFLOW METER SENSOR SIGNAL CIRCUIT
--AIRFLOW METER/CIRCUIT

--MANIFOLD PRESSURE SENSOR/CIRCUIT

--ECU

Guess it's time to bust out a multimeter and manual. My guess would be that it's a loose or corroded wiring. Does the truck still fire up and run or is it completely dead?

Maverick

:D YESYES Fixed that shit!!!!! It was my intake tube, it wasnt on all the way, so the sensor wasnt getting a good reading. Ahhhh so much better. I have a nasty exhaust leak though:( sounds like crap. Thanks alot for your help Arnold:cool:
