View Full Version : Lets talk feul cells
Look like its time for the swap. Did some searching on line for fuel pumps and the like. Finding the fuel cell is easy. What I would like to hear from those in the know is this.
1 Have FI so what pump is a good one for this aplication.( 87 XJ 4.0)
2 Fuel pick up in the fuel cell ( don't want feul starvation problems)
3 What capacity (gallons) are most of ya are running.
Just looking for some info to help me make up my mind on wich way to set this up. Also I think alot of wheelers could benifit from some good input on this topic. Try too keep this thread on the "tech" side of fuel cells and fuel delivery solutions.

There are obviously other solutions but this is one that has worked well in the past.
Mallory 4060FI electric fuel pump. High pressure for fuel injection and runs 60gph.

As for the fuel cell, I guess it depends on how long you wanna be out in the woods. For example....I run a twelve gallon, foam lined cell & after a full day of wheelin (6-8hrs) at Reiter I've only burned 4 gallons & that's with a small V8, your 4.0L should be at least equal if not better.
Competion only, no bigger than 4 gallons.
Trail Rig, minimum 12, 16 to 20 would probably be better.
The vertical drag race style of cells work better for fuel starvation issues because they tend to be taller & narrower thus keeping the gas at the bottom of the tank where the p/u's are. The circle track tanks have the p/u routed to the right rear corner as do the pro-sport. One option is to have one custom made like Toyman, it virtually eliminates fuel starvation.

I guess you also need to decide whether you want aluminum, plastic, or plastic lined steel tank, foam lined & whether or not you want a fuel gauge sending unit?
You'll also want to look into the rollover valve, sum of the aluminum tanks have them built in.

I said screw it, and now setup to do alum. so I am building my own...

I am considering that. What are you doing for feul pickup? Front and rear pickups or an in tank weighted fuel hose.

To be honest, haven't gotten that far, it might come down to what I have to wrok with on the room factor.

I picked up a 20gal Summit tank, plus the multi-pickup setup to avoid fuel starvation. Uhm, it's still sitting in my shop if you want it :) I picked up Robin's tank cuz it fit my application better.
As far as pumps go, I think the Master E2000 pump avail at Schucks will give you the right fuel pressure. Otherwise, look on pirate.

Tank is to big for what I am looking for. Got a link to the multi-pickup setup? Might work for me if I biuld my own fuel cell.

Cool, I have been waiting to post this link up somewhere. I think its one of the better inventions out there.

Yea, that's the kit. I'm not sure if I'm going to use it, my new fuel cell has a REALLY deep sump (6") so I don't think the pickup could ever go dry...

I have a 23 Gal plastic cell with foam. It is a circle track so I just moved the pickup to the center of the tank. (it's just a rubber hose). Never had a starvation problem.
I have Holley Pro jection so I run a Holley pump but there are many others.:)

The stock fuel pumps from the 87-94 xj's work very well. I run one on the frame, not in the tank of my cj. It has been on there for 5 years now with no problems, it will even run 50 psi for the later 4.0l fuel systems.

I was wondering if that would work. That will save a buck or two.
Thanks DT
