View Full Version : Walker Valley work party!!

November 15-16, 8:30 am Walker Valley main parking lot on Peter Burns Road.
Conversion trail work, more details to follow soon! Need MANY MANY hands.
also...walker valley will most likely be experiencing another winter "riding season" aka winter loop which means all 4wd's should follow trails marked with the blue diamonds (4x4 trails only, motorcycle and ATV's will have yellow and orange colored diamonds I believe) starting November 1, 2003.
At this time most likely the only trail to see closure affected by 4wd's will be closure due to extreme water run off is the Expressway/Boulder Creek and Poop Chute. Lower Jeep Access or the HoCheMinh trail from Lake Cavanaugh road has been PERMANENTLY closed. You will be ticketed/cited if found using or attempting to gain access through this area. It is NOT signed from the trail system side and access is easy its once your down in there but its tough to get out, Please stay out of that lower area!

There will be three different work parties, so there is plenty of work to go around. The goal of the weekend will be to finish most of the heavy work on the planned loop. This will mean less two way traffic on the Jeep Access trail and more areas to run in the future.
There are multiple clubs involved with this project so lets get as many people out there as possible.

As a current member of the 33"er club I am willing to clean sh*t up and make better for my future.
I love being bossed by a woman...;)
Since I am deaf no B.S.ing, can't hear it anyway:redneck:

Is this the same/ part of the annual clean up?
I don't think I can make it due to work.:(

NO, this is not a litter cleanup or in any way associated with one. (unless you see something on the trail that hasnt been open for any traffic yet so it should be clean)
This work party will help get the 4 mile conversion trail closer to being done, there is a lot of work to do and I seriously doubt that it will be open this winter (or available during the winter loop) as we have a section to re-route due to unstable soils and when its wet, travel on it may only make things worse until it settles but we will see once the dirt gets pushed around some.
Also with the equipment, swinging of tools, many folks, *please* leave your kids at home. Feel free to bring them back when out using/4wheeling the trails another time. Its been our experience that kids get bored at work parties, pick up tools that they see "dad" using and it ends up not being a safe situation, thanks for your anticipated understanding.
With the Lower HoCheMinh (lower jeep access) from Lake Cavanaugh closed this means **NOW** if you run 4x4 at Walker Valley you HAVE to enter around the gate shu fly (by the parking lot) wheel the trail and turn around and come back the same exact route. Also beyond the Main Line trail ending, you can still run Short & Dirty (or used to be Jeep Cross) but have to do the same, turn around and run the trails back out again. there is NO LOOP currently as the DNR decomissioned the lower 4wd route out of the orv area.
Hope this helps clarify?

I am posting some pics of the upper 4wd bridge, the materials including beams were flown in with a helicopter and bolted together and decked by our club in May. The work party will include backfilling the approaches to this bridge, building retaining walls and rerouting the NW end of the bridge due to bulkhead placement.
The additional 4 beams that will be installed are longer/heavier than these beams and will be moved with a piece of equipment.

The DNR will be renting an Excavator. If you have one available or would like to rent it out to the DNR you should contact Tom or let someone who is on the "Walker Valley Comittee" so they can contact him with the offer.
As a side note, don't forget to send in letters of support as referenced here (http://www.snort4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=4102) . :)

Go ahead and bring anything you think may be useful, as long as you don't have to tow it. After all, it's better to wish you didn't bring something then wish you had. :D

Gonna try to make it, however I will be rig-less. If I can make it up to the staging area, anybody be able to give me a ride to work area? (Yeah, I could walk, but then God wouldn't have given us 4-Low.:D )

Hop in D....the short bus has plenty of room!

You don't need anything besides your car to get to the work sights. Both bridges are within walking distance of the road, and there will probably be open seats available for car-pooling from the Staging area.

Depending on how many folks show up and what rigs are needed, many will probably be parking on the gravel road and walking a short distance to where the work will actually take place anyhow. :)
Once i get a reply from Christ I will know more about what tools (if any) are needed. Plan the basics: warm, dry clothing, food, water and willingness to help open a few more miles of 4x4 use at Walker Valley :)
