Some news to share with everyone:
I have accepted a position with State Parks at their regional office in
Burlington and will be leaving DNR after 16 years. It's been a good run and I
feel like we have made big strides in a positive direction for Walker Valley
ORV. I think the momentum is there and won't turn around after I am gone.
Hopefully, after Walker Valley is gliding along smoothly, DNR can tackle Reiter
Trails if funding and staff allow.
DNR plans to fill my position as soon as possible. In the interim, Christ
Thomsen will be handling oversite of Walker Valley, Reiter, and other areas.
As you all know, Casey (our "Mr. Walker Valley") took a permanent position with
Dept. of Ecology. We feel that it is best to not hire a new person for his
position until we have some assurance that we will get two more years of funding
for Walker Valley M&O (we should have a good idea in February). Our success
hiring Casey's replacement would likely have been low if we could only guarantee
6 months of work. We'll do much better when we can reasonably guarantee 2
years.
In the interim, Rick Foster, our WCC crew supervisor will be filling in behind
Casey. Rick has been with DNR for a number of years and has a lot of experience
at Walker. We'll be hiring a 4 person crew to work for Rick for the next 6
months.
Josh Kelley, who has been working at Walker for the past 8 months will fill in
for Rick's WCC position. Josh was on the WCC crew for 2 years (1 year as a lead
crewman). Because of our WCC obligations with State Parks and WDFW, we felt we
needed to put someone with experience in that position.
Though it seems like lots of changes, switching Josh and Rick will go smoothly
since they have filled each others shoes before and can look to each other for
help/advice when needed.
There are many projects in the works at Walker Valley. I hope you continue to
support DNR's efforts to bring Walker Valley up to a model ORV management area.
