* WILDALERT -- Friday, July 2, 2004
* Brought to you by The Wilderness Society
*****************************************

Little time remains in the 108th Congress. That means little
time remains for Washington State's congressional delegation to
press for passage of the important Wild Sky Wilderness Act
(H.R.822 in the House, S.391 in the Senate).

What a wonderful accomplishment it would be, and what a gift to
future generations, if we can protect these wonderful places by
the time we celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the Wilderness Act
this fall. That won't happen without leadership and we won't get
it without your help.

PLEASE TAKE ACTION TODAY!

Our goal is to present to our Members of Congress petitions with
10,000 signatures urging action on the Wild Sky Wilderness Act
before time slips away. You can add your name to the petition at
http://www.wawild.org/Wild_Sky_Support.html

And for the sake of the remarkable lands this legislation would
protect, will you take a moment to forward this WildAlert to
friends and family members who share your affection for wild
places?

ABOUT THE WILD SKY WILDERNESS ACT

The Wild Sky Wilderness Bill, H.R. 822, is our best chance in
almost 20 years to designate new wilderness in Washington State.
The bill would permanently protect 106,000 acres of scenic
wildlands in the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, including
low elevation old-growth forests and prime wildlife and salmon
habitat. But the next several weeks in Congress, just about all
the time that's left, will be crucial for the Wild Sky
Wilderness Act.

What makes success so enticingly possible is that this
legislation is so popular in the region. Dozens of businesses in
the Skykomish Valley support the Wild Sky bill. Over 60 mayors
from around the state have voiced support for the legislation.
In a letter sent to the entire Washington congressional
delegation, the mayors made their case for why wilderness
protection is good for their local communities and called on the
delegation to work together and "make the Wild Sky a reality."

WILDERNESS IS NO PARTISAN ISSUE IN WASHINGTON STATE

Wilderness protection in Washington has always been a bipartisan
undertaking and should be this time as well. In a column in the
Seattle Times, former Governor and U.S. Senator Daniel J. Evans
reminded his Republican colleagues of that history and of
today's opportunity. Mr. Evans recounted the bipartisan effort
by the Washington congressional delegation to designate the
Alpine Lakes, William O. Douglas, Glacier Peak and Henry M.
Jackson Wilderness Areas. He urged today's delegation to use its
influence to ensure that Wild Sky legislation makes it through
this Congress.

The Senate actually passed the bill in the first session of this
Congress and cleared a key House committee. But the Congress
adjourned before the measure could come up for a vote before the
full House of Representatives. The Wild Sky bill continues to
gain political, business and organizational support. It does not
lack supporters; it lacks time.
