Threatened wild and natural lands in Washington urgently need
funding from Congress to make sure they are permanently
protected. We have a chance, and the mechanism, to preserve some of the most beautiful and vulnerable places here and elsewhere in the country from degradation and development. But Congress must provide Land and Water Conservation Fund monies for these specific places to make that happen.

These Washington projects are at risk and need your help:

- I-90 Plum Creek Option Lands;
- Mount Rainier National Park Addition (Carbon River); and,
- Pacific Northwest Streams, White River.

Please contact your U.S. Senators today and ask them to request
a specific funding "earmark" for these critical projects. You
can take action immediately from

THE LAND AND WATER CONSERVATION FUND

Across the country, development and degradation threaten lands
with outstanding wild and natural values. Protecting their
fragile beauty requires fast work. Luckily, there is a way to
save them.

In 1964, Congress made a farsighted investment in America's
public lands by creating the Land and Water Conservation Fund or
LWCF. Since its creation, LWCF money has bought over 7 million
acres of open space and has been instrumental in the development of nearly 40,000 recreation and park areas.

But for LWCF to work, Congress must act each year to appropriate money for it in the Interior Appropriations bill to pay for critical projects. Money is tight this year, and opponents of
LWCF are fighting to keep LWCF funding low. Last year, the House of Representatives did not appropriate LWCF for specific
projects at all. This year, it's crucial that both the House and
Senate provide specific funding "earmarks" for priority LWCF
projects. Congress won't fulfill the promise of LWCF, and won't
save these critical projects in Washington, unless constituents
like you make their voices heard. If these beautiful, threatened
lands are not protected this year, they may be lost forever.

SAMPLE LETTER

Dear _____________:

I write to urge you to seek funding for several critically
important land acquisition projects in Washington. Here at home
and across the country, rare and valuable lands are at risk.
Please act to make sure these irreplaceable lands are saved for
current and future generations.

I-90 Plum Creek Option Lands. The Forest Service needs an
appropriation of $3.4 million from the Land and Water
Conservation Fund in the Fiscal Year 2005 Interior
Appropriations bill to complete the purchase of the last four
Plum Creek Timber Company "option" lands.

Mount Rainier National Park Addition (Carbon River). The
National Park Service needs $6 million from the Land and Water
Conservation Fund in the Fiscal Year 2005 Interior
Appropriations bill to acquire critical inholdings within the
boundaries of Mount Rainer National Park.

Pacific Northwest Streams, White River. The Forest Service needs
$300,000 from the Land and Water Conservation Fund in the
Fiscal Year 2005 Interior Appropriations bill to acquire and
protect 128 acres of essential habitat in the upper Wenatchee
Basin.

In addition to securing funding specifically for these projects,
please help ensure the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF)
federal land acquisition program remains strong and is fully
funded at $450 million. Adequate funding for federal land
acquisition is the key to effectively protecting our most
vulnerable and important national parks, forests, wildlife
refuges, monuments, wildernesses and other public lands.

An essential attribute of being an American is love of the land.
These wild and vulnerable lands need our help and protection
now. Your leadership can help ensure that the Interior
Appropriations bill includes sufficient LWCF funding to
guarantee the future of these places.

Sincerely,
(Your name and address)
